Getting to Know Darrell Schwartz
Name: Darrell Schwartz
City/State: Port St. Lucie, FL
This month we are proud to honor Darrell Schwartz as our Coordinator of the Month. Darrell has been with Twinn Palms for the past 2 ½ years and in that time he has done an amazing job at ensuring his host families and students are well taken care of and feeling supportive in their roles. Darrell is a wonderful Coordinator and we are grateful to have him as a part of the Twinn Palms team. Congratulations Darrell on a job well done!
What have you learned as a Homestay Coordinator with Twinn Palms?
In my time as a Coordinator with Twinn Palms I have gained a great deal of wisdom. However, the most important thing that I’ve learned is the benefit of listening to the issues and problems of my host students before jumping into action. It’s also important that host families and students are actively participating as a family and communicating with one another on a regular basis. This is key to a successful pairing of family and student.
What was your favorite moment with your students?
I think my most favorite thing about helping students is when you see how excited they are when they’re achieving their educational goals, graduating, and going to a college/university of their choice in the United States. This is why I do what I do. Moments like these make this entire endeavor worth it to me.
What do you recommend as the number one “must have” for a host family?
There are many “must haves” that a host family should consider. Ultimately though, in my experience, the number one thing I can recommend to other host families is being open to learning from their host student and making their student feel like he/she is a part of the family as one of their children. When a student feels “at home” with a family, he/she really thrives.
Thank you again, Darrell, for your dedication to your role as Homestay Coordinator; you are truly appreciated and valued.
